Jazz fans and families will want to mark their calendars for the second annual Paul Montgomery Memorial Father’s Day Jazz Concert, a special Father’s Day concert featuring local and national jazz musicians.

The concert will feature Dr. Ronald Carter, the director of Jazz Studies at Northern Illinois University.
In keeping with the family focus of the Concert, Dr. Carter will perform with his daughter, Demetria Carter, a singer who studies at North Carolina Central University. Also performing will be the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble and the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra both of which are directed by Dr. Gregg Gelb, and Kathy and Chris Gelb, daughter and grandson of the late Paul Montgomery, a longtime musician in the Raleigh area and beloved “Uncle Paul” of WRAL.
Music lovers are in for a treat in hearing Dr. Ronald Carter. He serves as lead artist for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Band Director Academy and education consultant for the Essentially Ellington Program. He has performed with Clark Terry, Lou Rawls, Jimmy Dorsey, Terrell Stafford, and many others. He is in Downbeat Magazine’s Hall of Fame and has recently performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival.
Bring your chair, food and drinks, but please no alcohol - the amphitheatre is a City of Raleigh park.

Gregg Gelb Jazz Quartet bops at the Forum
"Jazz renaissance man Gregg Gelb brought his bebop-to-post-bop quartet to the Outer Banks Forum's show at First Flight High School Saturday evening. The music ranged from ancient jazz ('Sweet Georgia Brown') to Gershwin and Porter standards to originals. Highlights were an inventive arrangement and excellent execution of Juan Tizol's 'Caravan,' and Gelb's own tribute to 'Giant Steps'-era fellow tarheel John Coltrane. From left, Steve Anderson at the piano, Gelb on sax and clarinet, Alex Van Gils on bass, and Gelb's son Chris on drums all had chances to shine, and shine they did."

Hoffman This Tue., Feb. 5 at the Temple Theatre in Sanford at 7pm, a jazz concert
featuring three of the Nashville, Tenn. musicians from the current Temple
Theatre production, "Swinging Cowboys," team up with Chris Gelb, Court
Stewart and Gregg Gelb for a swinging jazz concert.The show features the excellent vocalist Carolyn Martin and her bass playing
husband Dave Martin, plus the amazing Rory Hoffman on guitar, piano, and
accordion. Blind from birth, Rory can play 14 instruments and his
ability to improvise licks of lightning speed while invoking the mastery of
players like Charlie Christian and Art Tatum is simply outstanding.
$15 admission.The Temple Theatre is located at 120 Carthage St., Sanford, NC.

Virginia has been an active participant in the New York jazz scene since 1987. Virginia’s new presentation, the Mary Lou Williams Project: The Next 100 Years will be the key component of her concert here. We will feature Virginia as soloist with the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra and also in a small group setting that showcases her compositions. The concert will honor Women in Jazz and Black History Month by paying tribute to the music of Mary Lou Williams. In addition, the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra will perform transcriptions of original big band arrangements by Mary Lou Williams. Additionally, Virginia is writing a big band arrangement of one of her tunes for the HOCJO to perform with her.

Hoffman This Tue., Feb. 5 at the Temple Theatre in Sanford at 7pm, a jazz concert
featuring three of the Nashville, Tenn. musicians from the current Temple
Theatre production, "Swinging Cowboys," team up with Chris Gelb, Court
Stewart and Gregg Gelb for a swinging jazz concert.The show features the excellent vocalist Carolyn Martin and her bass playing
husband Dave Martin, plus the amazing Rory Hoffman on guitar, piano, and
accordion. Blind from birth, Rory can play 14 instruments and his
ability to improvise licks of lightning speed while invoking the mastery of
players like Charlie Christian and Art Tatum is simply outstanding.
$15 admission.The Temple Theatre is located at 120 Carthage St., Sanford, NC.

2/15-16/13 - Virginia Mayhew to perform with HOCJO at Temple Theatre, 8pm. Virginia Mayhew is a saxophonist-composer-arranger. Virginia has been an active participant in the New York jazz scene since 1987. Virginia’s new presentation, the Mary Lou Williams Project: The Next 100 Years will be the key component of her concert here. We will feature Virginia as soloist with the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra and also in a small group setting that showcases her compositions. The concert will honor Women in Jazz and Black History Month by paying tribute to the music of Mary Lou Williams. In addition, the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra will perform transcriptions of original big band arrangements by Mary Lou Williams. Additionally, Virginia is writing a big band arrangement of one of her tunes for the HOCJO to perform with her.
